Loughborough confirmed as official Team Base for Rugby
World Cup 2015

Loughborough University will be a Team Base for three teams: Namibia, Tonga and the Play-off Winner at Rugby World Cup 2015. A Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Base will consist of an outdoor pitch, indoor training facility, a swimming pool, gym and hotel and will be utilised by the competing teams in the lead up to and during the six week event.

Over 2,000 flowers were used to achieve the beautiful poppy design outside Loughborough University in Epinal Way. Karen Setchell, the assistant supervisor of the grounds and gardens team at the University, designed the poppy display to pay tribute to 100 years since the start of WW1.

Student satisfaction at Loughborough has increased again, according to the latest National Student Survey, published on 12 August.
Eight-nine percent of Loughborough’s students, compared with a national average of 86%, are satisfied overall with their course, placing the University in the top 15% of the UK’s 156 higher education institutions.

Graduate, Alex Davis will join the England Sevens set-up ahead of this season's HSBC Sevens World Series. The 21 year old back has signed his first professional rugby contract after been selected to play for England in the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Series in Lyon this month.

Graduate wins major award for redesign of stoma bag

Graduate, Phillip Jackson has won a major award for his innovative redesign of a stoma bag and he is hoping to bring it to market. Phillip, who graduated from the Design School with a first in BA Industrial Design and Technology, was honoured by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) during this year’s Student Design Awards.

Sophie-Louise Hyde, 23, devised the guidebook, You is for University, as a way to prepare students for their time in Higher Education and campus life. Richard III visitor centre opens tomorrow

Leicester’s new £4 million Richard III visitor centre will open to the public on Saturday, July 26. Tickets for the attraction, which will offer access to the former monarch’s original burial site, go on sale from today. There will be a chance to visit the site of King Richard's burial, and visitors will also be able to see a full-size, 3D replica skeleton created by Loughborough University.

James Bowtell of Loughborough University, is endeavouring to become the fastest man to cycle across Europe, a distance almost twice as long as the Tour De France. James will have to complete a staggering 6,226 km in less than 45 days to set the Guinness World Record.

Congratulations to alumnus and founder of Version22design, Simon Lyons, who has just been announced undergraduate winner of the national Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards.
Simon, who graduated from Loughborough with first-class honours in 2013, follows in the footsteps of Ross Kemp (Asap Water Crafts) and Laurence Kemball Cook (Pavegen), who respectively won third and first place in 2013 and 2012.

Former and current members of Loughborough Students' Athletics Club have won national titles at the Sainsbury’s British Championships held in Birmingham.
Current Sports Scholar Niall Flannery claimed his first ever British title and a place at the European Championships as he stormed home in the 400m hurdles, getting the better of training partner Tom Burton in the home straight to clock 49.54.

They will be hoping to emulate the achievements of those selected in the 2010 games in New Delhi, where Loughborough based athletes scooped 44 medals - enough to put it in eighth place in the medal tables if it were a country!

Design-conscious pet products, personalised exercise programmes to help heart patients recover and a skills boosting programme for young people in South Africa are amongst the business ventures recognised at Think BIG, Loughborough University’s annual celebration of student and graduate enterprise.
An audience of over 130 gathered to celebrate a wealth of innovative projects developed by the University’s students and recent graduates. Julie Holland, Director of the University’s Glendonbrook Centre for Enterprise Education presented a £15k prize fund to help turn these promising ideas into sustainable businesses.

David Williams, Professor of Healthcare Engineering at Loughborough University, has been awarded an OBE for services to science and engineering in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
David moved to Loughborough in 1989 saw Professor Williams appointed to the Chair of Manufacturing Processes, and two years later he also took up the role of head of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering.
He was recently been appointed as the academic lead for the University’s Research Challenge in Health and Wellbeing.

Local pupils celebrate World Environment Day at

More than 100 East Midlands school students got to grips with glaciers, bugs and arctic exploration kit at Loughborough University to celebrate World Environment Day.
The University’s geography department welcomed year 9 and 10 students from six Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Schools for a packed day of workshops and practical experiments highlighting climate change and disaster management and showcasing the breadth of work carried out by geographers worldwide.

Alumni will be able to see the amazing work of students from Loughborough University’s School of Arts and the Design School when the degree shows are staged later this month.
The School of the Arts show opens to the public on Saturday June 7 and will run to Sunday, June 15. It is being staged across the School of the Arts sites from 10am until 5pm daily.
The Design School show is staged in the Design School and runs from Friday, June 13 to Tuesday, June 17 and is open to the public every day except Saturday evening which is for family and friends. Opening hours are 10am-5pm except June 17 when it closes at 4.30pm.

The Guardian university league table 2015 has confirmed Loughborough University as the region’s leading higher education institution.
The table, released today, ranks Loughborough University 15th overall in the UK and number one in the East Midlands.
The University’s Textiles degree course has topped the national table in the Fashion & textiles category; and a further 10 subject areas have also achieved a top 10 rank, including top five scores in Social policy and administration (2nd), Building and town and country planning (3rd), Engineering: materials and minerals (4th) and Design and crafts (5th).

A large contingent of Loughborough graduates, former players and coaches will be representing the England men’s and women’s teams at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup, taking place from 31 May – 15 June in the Netherlands.
The women’s team, who won the bronze medal in 2010, include former students Maddie Hinch, Laura Unsworth, Hannah MacLeod and Nicola White.
The squad are coached by Loughborough University Sport Hall of Fame member Jason Lee.

A former international head coach, who has worked with players that have won Olympic and World Championship medals, has been appointed to the Loughborough Badminton programme. Andy Wood has been actively coaching badminton, from grass-roots to the elite level, for over 30 years. He has previously worked at Loughborough initially as Head Coach, and also as Director of Badminton.

Ten Loughborough swimmers have been selected by Team England for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Amy Smith, Francesca Halsall, Daniel Fogg, Liam Tancock and Roberto Pavoni, have attended previous Commonwealth Games and all will be looking to add to their collection of medals.

Now in their fifth year, and hosted on the University’s Science and Enterprise Parks, the Enterprise Awards recognise the impact of the University’s research partnerships and its game-changing graduates. The face of a motorcyclist who was severely injured in a crash has been repaired using 3-D printing.Using the latest methods from the Centre for Applied Reconstructive Technologies in Surgery (CARTIS), Loughborough University PhD student Sean Peel and Ffion O’Malley from Cardiff Metropolitan University, laid the groundwork for the operation under the guidance of Dr Dominic Eggbeer.

Honourary Doctor of the University and former Leicester Tigers rugby player Matt Hampson, will be the guest of honour at the official opening of Ashmount School on Thursday 6th February.
The £9.35 million building in Loughborough offers places for 125 children and young people aged between 4 and 19, and features a hydrotherapy pool, sensory area with interactive floor and art work created by pupils.
